JAY CHOU X SOTHEBY’S : Contemporary Curated: Asia

In midsummer June, Sotheby’s and Chinese popstar Jay Chou had an unprecedented cross-over collaboration, presenting an extraordinary event combining popular entertainment and art.

Jay Chou integrates different roles such as musician, singer-songwriter, actor and director. His music, stage performances and films are internationally renowned and popular all over the world. He is also an enthusiastic art collector who has firmly established himself in the Asian and international art circles. This time, with his influence on social media, he let the world see his enthusiasm as an art collector.

Guest curator Jay Chou commented: “It’s really honorable to be able to curate together with the teams of Sotheby’s and Enviseam. We are trying to use a unique way to bring art to new audiences and realize my vision.”

In order to create this grand event combining popular entertainment and art, Jay Chou dedicated the three sets of costumes he wore in the seventh solo world tour “The Strongest on the Surface”. The three pieces were sold for HK$2.6 million and all proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish International Foundation.

Luo Jiaxi, Managing Director of Sotheby’s Asia, said: “The first “Contemporary Curated: Asia” co-curated by Sotheby’s and Jay Chou has achieved outstanding results. It is a real honour. The “Jay Chou x Sotheby’s” day auction ended on June 22, and it also recorded impressive results. This online special lasted for a week, presenting more than 100 exquisite lots, including masterpieces by Western and Asian masters of art such as Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama and KAWS, as well as the highly sought-after rookies of art-Kato Izumi, Madsaki and Rokka Ayako Superb handwriting.

Yukimasa Ida 井田幸昌’s painting “The King of Rock and Roll” created for the first Contemporary Curated: Asia attracted enthusiastic competition from collectors. After more than 20 bids, it finally sold for HK$2.8 million (US$357,000).
